Surgery soon could give blind seal chance to see for first time
The sanctuary has raised $16,575 toward a $20,935 operation that could restore sight and reduce fear in the 10-year-old seal.
The Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek, Cornwall, launched a fundraiser seeking $20,935 for cataract surgery to help its resident, a 10-year-old common seal named Jarvis, see for the first time.
Rescued in 2016 with cataracts in both eyes, Jarvis has lived at the sanctuary for 10 years; staff describe the 'funny' and 'sassy' seal as fearful due to his blindness.
Animal care specialist Clare Addyman said, "This potentially life-changing surgery is basically the best thing that we can offer Jarvis." The procedure begins on a day next week, commencing Oct. 12.
Supporters have donated $16,575 toward the goal, with sanctuary staff expressing gratitude for public kindness as every contribution assists the life-changing operation.
Addyman noted the process may be overwhelming for Jarvis, as he has spent his life unable to see, but she believes the surgery will ultimately help him feel safer.
