Supreme Court's Nod on Mekedatu: DK Shivakumar Hails Decision as Win-Win for Karnataka and Tamil Nadu
The Supreme Court ruled Tamil Nadu's challenge premature as expert bodies continue reviewing Karnataka's Mekedatu Detailed Project Report, with legal recourse available post-approval.
- On November 13, 2025 the Supreme Court of India refused to entertain Tamil Nadu's plea on the Mekedatu reservoir, calling the application 'premature' and directing return after expert review.
- The DPR is currently under review by the CWMA and CWRC, and the CWC said it will accept any report only after approvals from these two authorities.
- Project documents show the reservoir's capacity and catchment concerns, with Tamil Nadu citing 67.16 TMC ft and Karnataka planning 4.75 TMC ft use, about 400 MW generation, and Rs 9,000 crore to Rs 14,000 crore cost.
- The court stressed Karnataka's duty to release Cauvery water allocated to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and said parties could seek legal remedies if the DPR wins approval.
- The dispute traces to the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and its 2007 verdict, which allocated 419 and 270 thousand million cubic feet, with the Supreme Court previously declining technical intervention in August 25, 2023 order.
