Summerland to hold Pride parade

The parade will be followed by a barbecue and games, and organizers say community response has been overwhelmingly positive.

  • On Saturday, June 13, Summerland United Church and St. Stephen Anglican Church will host Summerland's first Pride parade, beginning at 11 a.m. at the corner of Prairie Valley Road and Rosedale Avenue.
  • Minister Anne Ellis stated the event aims to provide support for 2SLGBTQIA+ residents, saying, "In our denominations all people are beloved of God."
  • The parade route travels down Main Street, along Victoria Road North, Jubilee Road West, and Rosedale Avenue, followed by a barbecue and games at the church.
  • Despite past vandalism of rainbow crosswalks installed in 2015, Ellis noted the response to this parade has been overwhelmingly positive as Canada marks Pride Month.
  • Statistics Canada data indicates around 1.3 million people, or four per cent of the population, identify as 2SLGBTQI+, underscoring the significance of the Summerland Pride celebration.
