Cat’s name likely hints at villa owner’s link to North Africa
Archaeologists have discovered a remarkable multi-colored mosaic in the ruins of a Roman villa on the west coast of Turkey. They believe it is a memorial to a pet. Among the more than a dozen animals depicted are a dog and a cat, with their names written below them – Ocean and Emerald.
Excavations carried out in the ancient city of Adramytteion in Balikesir found a magnificent Roman villa of 1800 years. Archaeologists, studying the massive floor mosaics with 15 panels, identified the pets of the owners of the house named “Emerald” and “Ocean”.
