Women More Often Hired After Losing Weight on GLP-1s: Study
The Harvard study found a 27% rise in hiring for previously unemployed women after about 1.5 years on GLP-1 drugs.
- Harvard University economist Rebecca Diamond found that women who started taking GLP-1 weight-loss drugs were more likely to secure employment, with previously unemployed women seeing employment rates increase 27% after about a year and a half of use.
- Diamond analyzed the USC Understanding America Study, an online panel of more than 10,000 adults, comparing women who started using GLP-1s against a control group who expressed interest in the drugs but had not yet taken them.
- Single women taking the weight-loss medicine were also more likely, by equal measure, to get married or start living with a partner during the time period surveyed, Diamond's research showed.
- Life satisfaction did not change for participants despite these professional and personal shifts, Diamond noted, and the study could not determine if women eventually earned more due to insufficient data.
- Diamond wrote that mass pharmacological weight loss is not only a health shock; the research reveals a 'shock to the social and labor-market valuation of body weight,' with weight acting as one characteristic among richer information contexts.
