Students March Into Belgrade as Vucic Holds Rally in Southern Serbia Ahead of Vote
Students pressed anti-government demands as Vučić campaigned in the south, with police making similar arrests ahead of the vote.
Thousands of residents welcomed marching students to Belgrade on Wednesday, as the youth movement converges on the capital ahead of Sunday's tense parliamentary election challenging populist leader Aleksandar Vučić.
Student demonstrations first erupted after a train station tragedy in northern Serbia killed 16 people. The youth movement demanded accountability for the deaths, blaming alleged corruption-fueled negligence during renovation work.
President Aleksandar Vučić held a rally in the southern city of Niš, expressing confidence his Serbian Progressive Party will win Sunday's ballot. He reiterated accusations that students and professors worked under instructions from abroad to "breakdown" the country.
A report published Wednesday by the Serbian Center for Research, Transparency and Accountability cited "narrowing of freedoms and deepening of inequality" among voters. It noted over 100 violent incidents and major discrepancies in mainstream media coverage favoring the government.
Authorities detained six people on Wednesday suspected of planning unrest on election day. Police have made similar arrests ahead of major protests in the past, a tactic government critics claim is aimed at intimidating protest-goers.
