Hypersonic Talon-A Aircraft Exceeds Mach 5 in over 10 Test Flights
The reusable, autonomous test vehicle gathered flight data on aerodynamics, propulsion and thermal protection, Stratolaunch said.
- On Tuesday, July 21, 2026, Stratolaunch announced the completion of more than 10 successful hypersonic flights using its Talon-A, a fully autonomous, reusable air-launched aircraft designed to accelerate aerospace technology development.
- Launched from the Boeing 747-400 'Spirit of Mojave,' the aircraft accelerates to speeds exceeding Mach 5, or about 3,836 mph, enabling rapid refurbishment and reuse on standard runways.
- Each mission operates with full autonomy, requiring no onboard crew while gathering vital data on aerodynamics, propulsion, thermal protection, and advanced flight controls, demonstrating the vehicle's reliability.
- Stratolaunch's achievement supports government and commercial customers, including the Department of Defense's TRMC Multi-Service Advanced Capability Hypersonics Test Bed program, making hypersonic testing more affordable and accessible.
- To increase flight frequency, Stratolaunch now operates two carrier aircraft and two Talon vehicles, with CEO Dr. Zachary Krevor saying the company is transforming hypersonic testing into a routine service.
