Steelers rookie QB Drew Allar begins full mechanics overhaul under Mike McCarthy
On Saturday, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy and quarterbacks coach Tom Arth began rebuilding the mechanics of third-round draft pick Drew Allar at rookie minicamp. The coaching staff focused on footwork, essentially 'uninstalling' the rookie's previous college-level habits.
Despite Allar's talent as a three-year Penn State starter, inconsistent mechanics and footwork issues hindered his collegiate performance. Coaches are now correcting these flaws to prepare the rookie for the speed and processing demands of the NFL.
McCarthy, who previously rebuilt Aaron Rodgers' mechanics in Green Bay, is applying similar fundamental adjustments to Allar. The coach emphasized widening the quarterback's base and keeping him off his toes to improve his processing and pocket movement.
Joining a quarterback room with veteran Mason Rudolph and second-year signal-caller Will Howard, Allar faces a developmental path. While Howard could potentially start the season as QB1, the team is investing significant coaching resources into Allar's long-term growth.
Projections view Allar as a potential franchise quarterback and insurance policy should 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers retire. For now, the focus remains on the developmental process during minicamp, mirroring the patient approach McCarthy utilized earlier in his career.
