Valve Says Steam Controller Sold Out 'Faster Than We Anticipated' as Scalpers Cash In
Scalpers are listing the controller for up to $400 after it sold out in less than an hour, Valve has not said when more units will ship.
On Monday, Valve's new Steam Controller sold out within roughly 30 minutes despite its $100 RRP. Resellers are already listing units on platforms for as much as $400, nearly four times the original price.
Drawing significant interest for its trackpad haptics, the Steam Controller is Valve's first new peripheral in years. While immune to AI-fueled component shortages due to its lack of RAM, high demand from users waiting a decade for a new model caused the rapid sell-out.
In a Guide review, Tony said, "The Steam Controller is a nearly perfect PC game controller thanks to its fantastic design, solid performance, simple pairing and charging, and extreme level of customization." The $100 RRP made it competitive within the market.
Confirmed orders on resale sites currently start at $220, with several listings reaching $400. Valve has not yet confirmed when additional units will be available, leaving buyers to choose between waiting or paying inflated resale prices.
Valve is expected to restock the Steam Controller in the coming weeks or months. Fans are urged to avoid purchasing the original 2015 version by mistake and remain patient for legitimate inventory to return.
