Statistics Canada Finds Immigrants More Likely to Identify Shared Canadian Values

A survey found 67% of immigrants aged 13 or older view respect for the law as a Canadian value, compared to 40% of Canadian-born respondents, Statistics Canada reported.

  • On Jan. 16, 2026, Statistics Canada released survey findings obtained by The Canadian Press showing immigrants more often identify human rights, gender equality and cultural diversity as shared Canadian values than Canadian-born respondents.
  • Collected between August 2020 and February 2021, the dataset drew from Statistics Canada's December 2022 general survey on social identity, with invitations sent to 87,000 households and including more than 34,000 people and almost 14,000 landed immigrants.
  • The data show about 58 per cent of immigrants are satisfied with their lives, compared to 44 per cent of Canadian-born respondents, and 67 per cent of those who arrived aged 13 or older see respect for the law as a shared value versus 40 per cent of respondents born here.
  • The briefing package warns that immigrants and temporary residents play a crucial role in shaping Canada's housing market, while the federal government links immigration to rising housing costs and Daniel Bernhard said immigration accounts for about 10 per cent of the increase in housing prices.
  • Public polling shows roughly half of Canadians believe too many immigrants have arrived, while Lori Wilkinson warned planned cuts to immigration could hurt the economy and said satisfaction has dropped in recent years.
