State income tax could be eliminated in Georgia. How lawmakers plan to replace that money
Georgia Senate GOP plans phased income tax elimination funded by cutting business tax credits, aiming to exempt families under $100,000 and raise over $1 billion, lawmakers said.
- A Senate proposal unveiled Monday would let Georgians avoid paying income tax, led by Vidalia Republican state senator Blake Tillery.
- Using business tax incentives, the plan would target credits for Kia, Rivian and SK Battery to raise over $1 billion, Tillery said.
- In year one, taxpayers under $100,000 would pay no income tax, while families earning more than $100,000 would save an estimated $5,000.
- The measure cleared the Senate Finance Committee Monday, and senators warned that cutting credits could eliminate benefits and force tax hikes, Senate Minority Leader Harold Jones II said.
- A formal government accounting of the bill's costs has not yet been completed, even as legislators target credits to raise over $1 billion affecting data centers, affordable housing projects, and rural small businesses.
