Predators Get a Jump on Free Agency by Acquiring Mavrik Bourque in a Trade with the Stars
Nashville added a young forward and a veteran defenseman while Dallas gained draft picks and cap flexibility to pursue Jason Robertson.
On Wednesday, the Nashville Predators acquired forward Mavrik Bourque and defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin from the Dallas Stars, sending a 2027 second-round pick and a 2028 third-round pick to Dallas.
General manager Chris MacFarland praised Bourque as a quality two-way player at just 24 years old, while Lyubushkin provides veteran experience and physical presence to strengthen Nashville's defensive depth.
By clearing cap space, the Stars aim to secure restricted free agent Jason Robertson, who led Dallas in scoring last season with 96 points on 45 goals and 51 assists.
Across the NHL, the Florida Panthers acquired goalie Jacob Markstrom and defenseman Radko Gudas, while the Ottawa Senators re-signed forward Nick Cousins to a two-year contract worth $3.18 million.
A weak free-agent pool has prompted NHL teams to increasingly turn to the trade route to improve rosters this summer, a trend that became evident before the market opened Wednesday.
Mavrik Bourque will continue his career in the country city. The Dallas Stars traded the Quebec striker to the Nashville Predators with defenceman Ilya Lyubushkin in return for two picks in the draft.
