Starmer Warns Burnham It Will Not Be Possible to Focus Less on Global Affairs
Starmer said his successor must stay engaged on Ukraine and other global crises as critics accuse him of spending too much time abroad.
Outgoing Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer warned his likely successor Andy Burnham that international diplomacy cannot be separated from domestic affairs in the modern era. "Whoever's my successor is going to face the same global conflict," Starmer said.
Following the Makerfield by-election, Starmer announced his resignation on June 22, describing the decision to end his political career as "intensely personal" after spending two days with his family at Chequers.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch criticized Burnham for avoiding media scrutiny, but he responded: "Fair challenge, Kemi—but don't forget it's only two weeks since I faced questions from 74,000 members of the public in Makerfield."
Insisting he holds no "personal animosity" toward Burnham, Starmer promised to "keep my mouth shut, rather than giving constant advice to my successor about what they should be doing."
Burnham intends to adhere to the 2024 Labour manifesto and expressed interest in electoral reform to "enable the change to a more collaborative politics, and one that is less about point-scoring and more about problem-solving.
