Stan Wawrinka and Gael Monfils Bid Farewell to French Open After Losing in First Round
The 39-year-old Monfils and 41-year-old Wawrinka each fell in five- and four-set matches as both plan to retire later this year.
On Monday, Stan Wawrinka and Gael Monfils exited the French Open in first-round defeats, with the 41-year-old Wawrinka losing to Jesper de Jong 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 and the 39-year-old Monfils falling to Hugo Gaston 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 6-0 just before midnight.
Both players made their French Open debuts 21 years ago and are retiring at year's end, with Wawrinka having won three Grand Slam titles including the 2015 French Open after defeating Novak Djokovic in the final and Roger Federer in the quarterfinals.
Extreme heat and fatigue defined both matches as temperatures in Paris hit 33 degrees C ; Wawrinka said, "It's hard, it's hard to say goodbye to you here. It's because of Roland Garros that I wanted to become a tennis player." Monfils drew roaring support despite visible exhaustion.
Tournament director Amelie Mauresmo embraced Wawrinka courtside, and he watched video messages from Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, and Carlos Alcaraz. Monfils told him, "You are a legend of our sport," after also losing his first-round match at the Australian Open in January.
Monfils never reached a Grand Slam final despite 13 career titles and 22 lost finals, yet his popularity remained high, while Wawrinka still has Wimbledon and the US Open remaining before retirement at year's end.
