Staffing Employment Ticks Up in Third Quarter
Staffing employment increased by 0.3% in Q3 2025 while sales fell 8.5% year-to-year amid high costs and compressed profit margins, the American Staffing Association said.
- On Dec. 29, 2025, the American Staffing Association reported employment rose 0.3% from 2Q25 to 3Q25, adding 6,400 workers, while staffing sales fell 1.3%.
- The ASA, the industry's trade group, explained quarter-to-quarter staffing patterns typically decline in Q1, grow through the year, and peak in Q4, with year-to-year comparisons improving entering 3Q25.
- Beginning the week ending Sept. 12, the index recorded 14 weeks of year-to-year growth, with the employment gap narrowing to 8.5%, ASA said.
- About 2 million temporary and contract workers were employed weekly in 3Q25, while staffing sales totaled $28.1 billion and declined 8.5% year-to-year, Stephen Dwyer, ASA president, said hiring may be stabilizing but margins remain thin.
- The third quarter showed signs of recovery for staffing employment even as sales remained soft, and the ASA points readers to the survey page and index for further data.
