S&Ds: We need a bigger and better EU pluriannual budget post-2027

While discussions for the EU budget from 2028 to 2034 will begin this summer, the Commissioner for European Social Affairs visited on Thursday 24 April a Resto du coeur in Asnières-sur-Seine, Hauts-de-Seine.

The introduction of additional revenues will be one of the keys to the next Multiannual Financial Framework, which must make it possible to repay the common debt contracted with the post-Covid recovery plan, or even to finance the new priorities of the EU. However, in order to achieve this old dream, the Commission needs unanimous support from the Twenty-Seven, which, despite their 2020 promise, has so far been unable to reach agreement.

The European Parliament expressed its position for the first time on Wednesday on the new Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) in a report voted on by the Budget Committee, insisting that the next multiannual budget must have significantly more resources than the current budget period 2021-2027, according to the office of MEP Karl Ressler.

The European Parliament's Budget Committee today adopted a report in which MEPs outlined expectations and priorities for the next multiannual EU budget. More needs to be spent on security and defence, and this can only be achieved with greater competitiveness and a stronger economy, stressed the committee's co-rapporteur Siegfried Muresan (EPP).

"It must enable Europe to take responsibility for its security, strengthen productivity and strategic autonomy in key areas," Ressler stressed.
