Hope in Newfoundland Town as Government Seeks Removal of Rotting, Stinking Fish Sauce
The province says the first phase will remove 110 tanks of long-fermented fish sauce before a second tender targets demolition.
On Monday, the Newfoundland and Labrador government issued a tender to remove 110 vats of rotting fish sauce from an abandoned factory in St. Mary's, bringing hope to the town of about 300 people.
Opened in 1990, The Atlantic Seafood Sauce Company factory was abandoned a decade later following legal battles, leaving residents to struggle for over 20 years with a site Ryan called "unbearable. That's the best way to explain it."
The first phase involves solidifying the 1-2 feet of liquid waste on the factory floor, a process Mayor Ryan expects will take four to six weeks.
With the application process ending May 28, officials hope work begins by mid-June, while a separate tender for the building's demolition will follow once the initial cleanup phase is underway.
Andrew Furey's Liberal government has prioritized the cleanup over the past five years, a shift residents welcome after decades of frustration, with Mayor Ryan noting the town accepts temporary odors for a permanent fix.
