Spanish court sentences Carlo Ancelotti to one-year prison term for tax fraud
SPAIN, JUL 9 – Ancelotti was fined €386,000 and will likely avoid jail due to Spanish law for first-time non-violent offenders, despite being convicted of evading taxes on image rights.
- A Spanish court has sentenced Carlo Ancelotti, who previously coached Real Madrid, to a one-year prison term and imposed a fine of 386,361 euros for tax evasion dating back to 2014.
- The trial took place in early April 2025 at the 30th Criminal Court of Madrid, where Ancelotti denied intending to defraud tax authorities and rejected a prosecutor's deal seeking nearly five years in prison.
- Ancelotti testified for more than two hours, stating that he acted based on Real Madrid's legal and tax guidance, settled his outstanding tax debt in December 2021, and requested that factors such as delays in the legal process be taken into account as part of his defense.
- The fine amounted to approximately US$452,973, with the total unpaid taxes around 1.06 million euros, and the court dismissed the allegations connected to the 2015 fiscal year because there was insufficient proof of residency.
- Under Spanish law, individuals convicted of non-violent crimes with no prior record typically avoid imprisonment if their sentence is less than two years. Therefore, Ancelotti is unlikely to serve jail time but will be barred from receiving public aid for a period of three years.
