Spain Air-Drops 12 Tonnes Of Food Aid Over Gaza
GAZA STRIP, PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES, JUL 31 – Spain air-dropped 12 tonnes of food to feed about 11,000 people amid Gaza's worsening famine caused by blockade and conflict, with only 21% of $4 billion aid funded, officials said.
- On Thursday, Spain will dispatch an aid shipment to Gaza with 24 parachutes carrying 12 tonnes to help feed 11,000 people, said Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares.
- Ongoing blockade by Israel has lasted 18 years and, since March 2, has shut all crossings, prompting UN-backed experts to warn of a worst-case famine in Gaza.
- On Wednesday, health officers reported at least 50 Gazans killed and 400 injured while waiting for food near Zikim Crossing, as civilian casualties since 27 May rise to over 8,152.
- Albares urged Israel to open all land crossings permanently for aid and demanded a ceasefire, saying `What is happening in Gaza must end now and cannot be repeated`.
- Amid critical funding gaps, Spain's Foreign Affairs and Defense ministries have aid waiting to cross into Gaza from Egypt, as of 30 July, only about 21 per cent of the $4 billion appeal has been secured.
