SpaceX launches Starship test flight on second try
The debut flight of the upgraded rocket completed payload deployment and reentry tests despite engine shutdowns, SpaceX said.
- On Friday, SpaceX launched its largest Starship on a 12th test flight from Starbase, Texas, advancing development of the rocket for future interplanetary travel.
- The revamped Starship measures 407 feet tall and features 33 main engines, debuting two days after SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced plans to take the company public.
- Carrying 20 mock Starlink satellites, the mission concluded with the booster in The Gulf and the spacecraft in the Indian Ocean, with no equipment recovered.
- NASA is paying SpaceX and Blue Origin to provide lunar landers, with the Artemis program targeting the first crewed moon landing since 1972 as soon as 2028.
- Beyond NASA missions, SpaceX is pursuing private space tourism, with Chinese-born investor Chun Wang announcing plans to fly to Mars on the company's first interplanetary mission.
