SpaceX just got approval to launch another 7,500 next-gen Starlink satellites into orbit

FCC approval allows SpaceX to double Starlink Gen2 satellites to 15,000, promising 20 times greater throughput and expanded spectrum for faster, more reliable internet service.

  • Last Friday, the Federal Communications Commission approved SpaceX to launch another 7,500 Gen2 Starlink satellites, raising the total to 15,000 and expanding frequency and orbital permissions.
  • To expand capacity, Starlink Gen2 aims to deliver faster speeds and lower latency, and SpaceX argued these upgrades are needed to compete with fiber and Amazon's Project Kuiper, originally seeking nearly 30,000 satellites in 2020.
  • Technically, the Gen2 satellites deliver about a 20x throughput increase and will operate at lower altitudes to reduce latency, while SpaceX has recently lowered 4,400 satellites to cut collision risk.
  • The FCC attached deployment deadlines requiring half the newly approved satellites be in place by December 1, 2028, with the remainder operational by December 2031 and earlier Gen2 satellites finished by late 2027.
  • The approval prompted renewed concerns that astronomers and competitors warned about orbital congestion and collision risks, but the Federal Communications Commission said it weighed these issues and SpaceX's mitigation efforts despite the close-miss incident .
