Southlake Officer Honored After Rescuing Driver From Burning Vehicle During Traffic Stop
Corporal Joshua Swisher pulled the driver from the smoke-filled Nissan moments before the interior ignited, and he returned to his overnight shift with only burnt hair.
- On Sunday, Corporal Joshua Swisher of the Southlake Police Department rescued a driver from a burning Nissan along Highway 114, pulling him from the vehicle seconds before flames engulfed the interior.
- Swisher was conducting a traffic stop of a Mercedes for speeding when a smoking Nissan passed by and stopped just ahead, shifting his attention from the routine violation to an emergency.
- Acting seconds before the interior was engulfed, Swisher said, "I could not even see inside the vehicle. The only thing I saw was hands," describing the driver's desperate attempt to open the door from inside.
- The rescued driver was reunited with family at a nearby hospital and checked out safely, while the Mercedes driver received a warning instead of a ticket from Southlake police.
- Despite sustaining only minor burns to his arm, Swisher continued his overnight shift and downplayed the heroic act, saying "any other officer would have done the same thing.
