South Carolinian facing charges for threatening Trump will stay jailed
Federal authorities say Eric Swain wrote threats on his vehicle and could face 5 years in prison if convicted.
Apex police arrested Swain in North Carolina on Wednesday for threatening messages scrawled on his vehicle while driving toward Washington to target Republican President Donald Trump.
According to the federal complaint, Swain stated his motivation was the perceived wrongful death of his father, uncle, and grandfather, family members who served in the military and died under suspicious health-related circumstances.
Surveillance video documented messages scrawled on the vehicle after a car wash, including "Tell Donald he is fired" and "5 dead 5 years," according to the federal complaint.
On Monday, Swain appeared before Magistrate Judge Robert Numers and confirmed he understood the charges against him; he remains jailed until Thursday's hearing.
Conviction on the threat against the United States President carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison; Swain also faces state charges in Wake County District Court for resisting an officer, drug possession, and using a fictitious license plate.
