Nigeria: Xenophobia: President Ramaphosa Condemns South African 'Opportunists', 'Criminals' Attacking Other Africans
Ramaphosa said xenophobia has no place in South Africa and pledged tougher border enforcement, with authorities intercepting about 450,000 illegal entrants last year.
On Monday, President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned recent anti-immigrant violence, labeling perpetrators as "opportunists" while announcing plans to strengthen workplace enforcement against employers hiring undocumented foreign nationals.
Ramaphosa noted that undocumented migration strains healthcare, housing, and municipal services, particularly in poor communities, while some employers exploit cheaper foreign labor over hiring citizens at legal wages.
The Border Management Authority intercepted around 450,000 people attempting to enter illegally during the past financial year, while the president warned that vigilante acts like checking identification will not be tolerated.
Nigeria plans to repatriate at least 130 citizens following the violence, and Ghana has requested the African Union discuss the attacks at the upcoming Mid-Year Coordination Summit.
These outbreaks occur amid recurring economic hardship and high unemployment over the past two decades, prompting Ramaphosa to urge citizens to reject attempts to damage South Africa's international reputation and solidarity with Africa.
