At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, held from 19 to 23 January 2026, South Africa announced its "temporary departure" from the G20, while the United States held the rotating presidency for fiscal year 2026. "South Africa wants to avoid any problems, any crises with the United States, and this is a truly rational decision," explains RFI Koffi Kouakou, lecturer at the School of Governance at Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg.
