Vedanta Doubles South Africa Zinc Capacity to 500,000 Tonnes with $600 Million Investment

The project lifts annual zinc output to 500,000 tonnes and is expected to sustain 800 to 1,000 jobs, the company said.

  • On Friday, President Cyril Ramaphosa and Vedanta Ltd Director Priya Agarwal-Hebbar officially inaugurated the Gamsberg Phase II Expansion Project in Northern Cape, doubling the mine's annual zinc production capacity to 500,000 tonnes.
  • The expansion follows an investment of nearly $600 million, part of a nearly $1.5 billion commitment Vedanta made at the 2018 South Africa Investment Conference to strengthen production capacity.
  • Operations are expected to sustain between 800 and 1,000 jobs predominantly from Northern Cape, while Vedanta has invested nearly $20 million in community initiatives since 2011, benefiting more than 32,000 people annually in Namakwa.
  • "Government must work with Vedanta and other partners to address their requirements," President Ramaphosa said, welcoming the company's ambition to establish zinc smelting capacity in Northern Cape.
  • Vedanta aims to achieve annual zinc production of 3 million tonnes across India and South Africa, positioning the company to serve growing global demand for the metal.
