Sources: Grizzlies Trading Star Ja Morant to Trail Blazers
Two-time All-Star Ja Morant heads to Portland as the Grizzlies pivot to a rebuild, moving past a period defined by injuries and off-court conduct.
On Monday, the Memphis Grizzlies traded two-time NBA All-Star Ja Morant to the Portland Trail Blazers for Jerami Grant and Kris Murray, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania.
Morant's tenure in Memphis ended following a difficult stretch where off-court issues and injuries limited him to just 79 games over three seasons, including multiple suspensions for brandishing firearms on social media.
Under his five-year contract, Morant carries a $42.2 million cap hit next season and $44.9 million in 2027-28. Last season he averaged 19.5 points while shooting a career-low 41.0% from the field across 20 games.
Portland envisions a backcourt pairing of Morant and Damian Lillard, moving Grant and Murray to acquire the former All-Star and bolster its offensive potential.
Memphis commits to a rebuild with young pieces like Zach Edey and Jaylen Wells, while the Blazers may explore trades involving Scoot Henderson or Jrue Holiday to address roster depth.
