Condition of 12-Year-Old Injured in Annunciation Shooting Improving
Sophia Forchas, 12, remains hospitalized with serious brain injuries after the Aug. 27 shooting that killed two children and injured 21 others, hospital officials said.
- Twelve-Year-Old Sophia Forchas, critically injured in an Aug. 27 shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, has improved to serious condition as of Sept. 11.
- The shooting occurred during a back-to-school Mass, injuring 21 people mostly children, and two children were killed, with Sophia being the last hospitalized victim.
- Sophia suffered a gunshot wound to her left temporal lobe that damaged vital blood vessels; to relieve brain swelling, surgeons removed the left side of her skull, and the bullet is still retained in the region of her right occipital lobe.
- Neurosurgeon Dr. Walt Galicich explained that Sophia suffered a stroke due to her injury and is currently in a medically induced coma. He added that, had someone suggested just 10 days after the incident that there might be a chance for recovery, he would have considered it nearly impossible.
- Sophia's father expressed that she is fighting and will win this battle for all humanity, while doctors remain cautiously optimistic though lasting neurological impacts remain possible.
