Some Families Are 'Adopting' Turkeys for Thanksgiving Instead of Eating Them
Turkey adoption programs at sanctuaries have doubled sponsorships yearly, helping fund care and raise awareness about turkeys’ personalities and factory farm conditions.
- This past week, farm animal sanctuaries across the U.S. promoted a Thanksgiving alternative where families adopt turkeys, some displaying photos or gifting the adoptions.
- To reduce holiday slaughter and raise awareness, the campaigns aim to spare some of the tens of millions of turkeys killed at Thanksgiving and educate about factory farms, animal-rights advocates say.
- Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary, Erie, Colo., offers a $25 sponsorship with a certificate, photo and visit, and since 2022 sponsorships have doubled annually, aiming for an $18,000 goal this year.
- Donations have funded immediate care measures such as pasture expansion, feeding and rescuing turkeys, and public giving has totaled hundreds of thousands, Gene Baur said, covering veterinary bills costing thousands.
- Farm Sanctuary, which began its program in 1986, has rescued thousands of turkeys in nearly four decades, while Gus, a pardoned turkey now at Luvin Arms, has lived there since 2023.
