Some Democrats to boycott Trump State of the Union for rally
More than two dozen Democratic lawmakers joined a National Mall rally to protest Trump’s policies and boycott his State of the Union address, organizers said.
- On Feb. 24, President Donald Trump will deliver the State of the Union while at least a dozen Democrats plan to boycott and attend the People's State of the Union rally at 8:30 p.m. ET on the National Mall near the Capitol.
- Framed as counterprogramming, the rally responds to policy and conduct concerns raised by Democratic lawmakers amid a Department of Homeland Security shutdown and immigration enforcement disputes.
- Among lawmakers set to appear at the 8:30 p.m. rally are Sen. Ed Markey, Sen. Jeff Merkley, Sen. Chris Murphy, Sen. Tina Smith, Reps. Becca Balint, Greg Casar, and Pramila Jayapal, according to MoveOn.
- The planned absence would produce visible empty seats in the House chamber, breaking with congressional attendance norms as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries urged silent defiance or staying away.
- Looking to the midterms, Jeffries said Democrats could sit behind Trump next year, 'We're not going to his house. He's coming to our house, and it's the people's house'.
