Alberta Referendum: Results Delayed, 106 Polling Stations Closing Late
Late openings affected 104 polling stations across 42 districts, and Elections Alberta said extended hours will delay referendum results.
On Monday, Elections Alberta extended voting hours at 106 polling stations across the province after experiencing delayed openings, with Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure authorizing the extensions to ensure full service.
The referendum, called by Premier Danielle Smith, includes 10 questions addressing the Canadian Constitution and potential separation, which Smith stated aim to provide leverage in negotiations with Ottawa.
More than 1.3 million Albertans have already cast ballots via advance or special polls as of October 18, representing 43 per cent of eligible voters, with unofficial results withheld until all polling stations close.
Voters expressed mixed motivations throughout Monday, with some citing frustration toward Ottawa to send political messages. Calgary resident Amneet Mann criticized the referendum questions, saying "I just don't think that's what this country stands for."
Prime Minister Mark Carney urged Albertans to "say no to the nine" questions during a Calgary visit last week, while Parliament remains "united in grief" following a fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright on Saturday that killed four soldiers.
