China to Boost Wind and Solar Generation by More than 50% in Five Years
Global Energy Monitor said China had 513 gigawatts of wind and solar under construction in June as curtailment risks rise.
- A Global Energy Monitor report released Tuesday showed China had about 262 gigawatts of solar and 251 gigawatts of wind under construction in June, demonstrating sustained momentum in its renewable energy buildout.
- Electricity pricing rules implemented in June 2025 prompted companies to accelerate construction timelines to complete projects before the deadline, effectively front-loading installations.
- Despite only 60 gigawatts of solar installed through May, BloombergNEF forecasts China will reach 255 gigawatts by year-end. "If you look at the pipeline, the momentum never really slowed down," Yu said.
- Rising curtailment rates pose risks in western regions where much new construction is located, as the grid forces wind and solar plants to shut down to avoid overwhelming the network.
- China is pursuing a "two legs" approach to address grid bottlenecks: building long-distance transmission lines to move electricity east while relocating energy-intensive industries west to utilize abundant renewable power.
