Your Mac and iPad Prices Just Went up, Here's Why AI Data Centers Are to Blame
Apple cited a memory-chip shortage tied to AI data centers as Macs, iPads and other devices rose $100 to $300, while iPhone pricing stayed put.
- Apple shocked Wall Street last week by raising prices on most hardware, including Macs and iPads, by $100 to $300. The company linked these increases to a memory chip shortage caused by the build-out of data centers.
- Conventional memory contract prices soared about 90% to 95% in the first quarter as supply chains shifted toward high-bandwidth memory for AI servers. "The rapid expansion of AI data centers has created an extraordinary surge in demand for memory and storage," Apple said.
- Apple reported record 49.3% gross margins and 17% revenue growth in its fiscal second quarter ended March 28, 2026. Its most important product, the iPhone, was conspicuously missing from the price hikes.
- Timing explains the iPhone exclusion; raising prices mid-cycle is less effective than integrating hikes into a new lineup. As the entry point for Apple's ecosystem, the iPhone drives about half of revenue, making price adjustments particularly sensitive.
- Investors anticipate potential iPhone price increases this fall, likely concentrated on Pro models or higher storage tiers. Apple must balance defending record margins against the risk of suppressing the vital upgrade cycle that sustains its value.
