Smokey Bear, Pickleball, and Pollinator License Plates on the Way in WA
- Washington will introduce up to six new special license plates this fall, including designs featuring Smokey Bear, pickleball, and pollinators.
- These plates are authorized by Senate Bill 5444, an omnibus bill that Gov. Bob Ferguson signed into law on May 20, 2024.
- Senate Bill 5444 was sponsored by Sen. Adrian Cortes and backed by House members Ed Orcutt and Brandy Donaghy, with late Sen. Bill Ramos credited for energizing Senate approval.
- Starting November 1, new license plates will be available, with funds raised supporting wildfire prevention efforts, youth programs at Mount St. Helens, and the development of dedicated pickleball courts.
- The law restricts new plate applications until 2029, and additional plates require sponsors to submit at least 3,500 signatures for approval.
