Why Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins Wants To Be Honest About His Faith in Jesus
On his podcast, the Smashing Pumpkins frontman said he chose to speak openly about believing in Jesus despite possible career costs.
On the latest episode of his podcast, The Magnificent Others, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan told Stryper singer Michael Sweet, "I'm a Christian as well."
Watching Michael Sweet and Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad express their faith encouraged Corgan's decision, as he has discussed spiritual themes for more than 20 years.
Describing faith as "the third rail of rock and roll," Corgan argued that artists fear career repercussions for discussing God, yet decided to speak honestly about his beliefs despite potential risks.
Preaching on stage often "drives people away from God," Corgan noted, explaining that he prefers to let music do the talking rather than pulling out a Bible.
Citing a 2022 survey showing over 80% of Americans believe in God, Corgan questioned why faith remains taboo and emphasized he must remain authentic about who he is.
