Small Plane Makes Emergency Landing on Florida Interstate After Engine Stops
A pilot and flight student reported engine failure and burning oil before the Piper PA-28 landed on the interstate, with no injuries reported.
- On Monday, a 1974 Piper Cherokee Warrior made an emergency landing on I-10 east in Escambia County, Florida, near 9th Avenue after the pilot reported engine failure. The aircraft touched down safely, avoiding highway traffic and nearby infrastructure.
- The pilot alerted air traffic control to a critical loss of oil pressure and fumes in the cockpit while approaching Pensacola International Airport just before 11 a.m. The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed the emergency landing was necessitated by engine failure.
- Ecowaste Solutions driver Eric Jordan captured the landing on his dash camera, showing the aircraft gliding beneath a highway sign. "If I wouldnt have seen that shadow over my truck and slowed down, he would have been in the side of the cab," Jordan said.
- No injuries were reported among the pilot, flight student, or highway drivers. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the event while local authorities cleared the aircraft from the eastbound lanes to restore traffic flow.
- The aircraft operates out of the Pensacola Air Flight School and has been available for student training since 2022. Officials successfully moved the plane to the roadside, allowing eastbound traffic to resume after the temporary closure.
