2 Dead After Small Plane Crashes, Catches Fire in Hillsborough County: Officials
Firefighters extinguished the blaze and remain on scene as officials have not said whether anyone was injured or what caused the crash.
On Thursday, a small aircraft crashed near U.S. 301 and Maislin Drive in Hillsborough County, with Hillsborough County Fire Rescue and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office responding to the scene.
The Lancair Evolution airplane departed from Tampa Executive Airport before crashing, prompting multiple 911 calls to the HCSO at approximately 8:16 a.m.
Firefighters arrived to find the aircraft fully engulfed in flames in the East Lake-Orient Park area; HCFR crews extinguished the fire in less than 10 minutes.
Two people aboard the aircraft were killed in the crash, prompting Hillsborough County Chief Deputy Joseph Maurer to state, "This is a tragic day for the families of the two individuals that were involved in this plane crash."
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are expected to investigate the crash, though officials have not yet released information regarding the cause of the accident.
