Comcast, Paramount Skydance Mull Shutting European Streaming Venture SkyShowtime
The joint venture is weighing a sale or wind down as SkyShowtime serves several million subscribers across more than 20 European countries, the board said.
- On Monday, Comcast and Paramount Skydance informed SkyShowtime CEO Monty Sarhan they have launched a "review of strategic options" for the European streaming service, which includes the possibility of a wind down.
- Launched four years ago, SkyShowtime serves more than 20 European territories by combining programming from NBCUniversal, Peacock, Paramount, and Sky Studios, effectively offering a service with the combined strength of major platforms.
- The board's note to Sarhan described the update as "the beginning of a dialogue, not the end of one," emphasizing that the service continues to operate normally for customers and partners today.
- Uncertainty stems from the impending Paramount-WBD deal, as reports suggest plans to fold the service into Paramount. Industry sources indicated the David Ellison-run company's proposed ownership of HBO Max could breach the joint venture agreement.
- Regarding SkyShowtime, the board stated, "Where any proposal could affect employees, we will follow the information and consultation processes required in each of our markets," recognizing the difficult news creates uncertainty for the team.
