With long hooks and circular saws, the city of Harbin in the north-east of China has begun preparations for its famous ice festival. For traditional "ice picks", people cut large blocks from the frozen Songhua river. From these artists later form sculptures that are to be shown at the ice festival. The naturally frozen ice is considered stable as man-made blocks.
