Six more of Premier Smith’s UCP legislature members face recall petitions

Signature collection approved for six more United Conservative MLAs, raising the total to nine facing recall efforts that could alter Alberta's legislative majority, Elections Alberta said.

  • Elections Alberta confirmed Monday that signature collection can begin for six more UCP members, including cabinet ministers Rajan Sawhney, Myles McDougall, Dale Nally, and R.J. Sigurdson, bringing the total facing recall petitions to nine.
  • Under the Recall Act, petitioners must live in the constituency, pay a $500 processing fee, and provide a reason in 100 words or less with no set criteria.
  • Five targeted MLAs represent the Calgary area, and earlier petitions target Demetrios Nicolaides, Nolan Dyck and Angela Pitt, with petitioners citing education, the notwithstanding clause and communication failures.
  • Applicants have 90 days to collect signatures equal to 60 per cent of votes cast in the 2023 election, and if verified, a constituency vote is held within four months to remove the MLA.
  • Premier Danielle Smith said last week she is considering changes to the Recall Act, introduced under former UCP premier Jason Kenney, as the UCP holds 47 seats in the 87-member house.
