Six Dead Including British Family After Head-on 'Hire Car' Crash in Portugal
CASTRO VERDE, PORTUGAL, AUG 10 – The British family died in a head-on collision on a bend with an 80 km/h speed limit shortly after renting a car at Faro Airport, with two others also killed, authorities said.
- On Friday, August 8, the Serrano family—Jose Fale, 55; Maria Joao, 51; and twin sons Domingos and Afonso, 20—died in a head-on crash at Faro Airport, investigators said.
- After collecting their Nissan Juke at Faro International Airport, the family were traveling north on the IP2 main road when they collided head-on on a bend where signs show the speed limit is 80kmh.
- The local GNR Post in Castro Verde confirmed identities at 3:35 p.m. after the information she provided led officers to check with Faro Airport's hire car firm, officials said.
- Mourao authorities have canceled municipal activities for the entire weekend, and the Municipal Council of Mourao declared two days of mourning starting tomorrow.
- The Town Football Club paid tribute to the Serrano family, recalling that 'Afonso and were both an integral part of our U18's team in recent years, both brothers sadly passed away in Portugal with their parents and friends in a tragic car accident.
