SIU professor killed in shooting, wife arrested
Betty Akamani, 35, was arrested in connection with the shooting as investigators said no additional information will be released.
- On Saturday, Southern Illinois University Carbondale professor Kofi Akamani died following a shooting in Jackson County. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office responded to the incident off Lake Road between Murphysboro and Carbondale at 5 p.m.
- Following an investigation, JCSO arrested 35-year-old Betty Akamani in connection with the shooting. She has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with her husband's death.
- Emergency responders transported Akamani to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities noted the charge against Betty Akamani is an accusation and she is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
- SIU expressed condolences to Akamani's family, friends, colleagues, and students. Counseling services are available in Room 107 of the Agriculture Building from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for those affected.
- The investigation remains in its beginning stages, with JCSO receiving assistance from the Jackson County Ambulance Service, Coroner, and State's Attorney's Office. SIU will hold a memorial celebrating Akamani's life at a later date.
