SIT Arrests Second Man Accused of ‘Pocketing Badrinath Temple Donations’

- On Friday, the Special Investigation Team arrested former Badrinath Temple officer Rajendra Chauhan in Chamoli, Uttarakhand, following four hours of questioning regarding alleged embezzlement of devotee donations at the Shri Badarinath Dham.
- CCTV footage from June 22, 25, and 29 allegedly shows Chauhan placing bundles of ₹500 notes, jewelry, and other donated items into his pockets during the shrine's counting process.
- Police linked Chauhan to Pramod Nautiyal, a suspended Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee employee arrested July 12, and added criminal conspiracy charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita .
- Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami called the theft a "heinous crime," vowing legal action, while Congress leader Ganesh Godiyal demanded a judicial inquiry into alleged irregularities.
- The Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee transferred treasurer Sandesh Mehta and adopted recommendations to implement a mandatory dress code and install additional surveillance cameras in the counting area.
