Singapore PM strips Singh of Leader of Opposition post
Pritam Singh was removed as Leader of the Opposition after conviction for lying to parliament; Workers' Party to nominate a new MP to uphold parliamentary integrity.
- On Jan 15, 2026, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong removed Pritam Singh, Workers' Party MP and former Leader of the Opposition, inviting the WP to nominate another MP. Wong cited, `This legal outcome is final and conclusive it must be respected, and given full effect in determining his suitability to continue as the Leader of the Opposition`.
- On Wednesday the parliament backed a motion that Pritam Singh should not continue as Leader of the Opposition after his District Court conviction for two counts of lying to the Committee of Privileges and his appeal was dismissed last year.
- Singh will lose LO privileges including the right of first reply, more speaking time and twice the allowance of an elected MP, though he remains an MP and WP secretary-general with 12 seats in a 108-seat Parliament.
- He added that the nominee must not have been implicated in the Committee of Privileges findings and asked for the nomination soon, according to Mr Wong.
- The WP has launched an internal review, and Parliament agreed to consider implications for Sylvia Lim and Faisal Manap on January 14, highlighting the rarity of Singh's conviction.
