Singapore Period Drama ‘The Violinist’ Wins Annecy
The hand-drawn Singapore feature is the first from the country to win Annecy’s top prize, after an 11-minute standing ovation.
- The Singaporean-Spanish-Italian animated feature The Violinist won the top Cristal Award on Saturday at the 50th Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Directed by Singaporean Ervin Han and Spanish Disney veteran Raul Garcia, the film is the first Singaporean production to clinch the Cristal.
- Produced by Singapore's Robot Playground Media, Spain's TV ON Producciones, and Italy's Altri Occhi, the hand-drawn feature traces the history of Singapore and Malaya from 1929. It marks the first Singaporean production to compete at the festival in 15 years.
- The Violinist beat major contenders including the coming-of-age story Iron Boy, which secured the Jury and Audience Awards. Han reported the film received an 11-minute standing ovation, noting that the appreciation felt "amazing" after years of development.
- Double Academy Award winner Don Hertzfeldt claimed the short film Cristal for Paper Trail, while Blaise won the Contrechamp Grand Prize. Festival organizers confirmed a record 19,100 accredited attendees at the closing ceremony.
- Festival organizers confirmed dates of June 13-19 for the 2027 edition, where Colombia will be the Country of Honor. The event concluded with a tribute to Mexican illustrator Luis de la Rosa, who died in a train accident during the festivities.
