Singapore cyber agency urges stronger defences after fridge cyberattacks in Europe

  • On Friday, the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore issued a critical advisory following cyberattacks on internet-connected refrigeration systems at hundreds of European supermarkets and blood banks.
  • Poorly secured remote access to operational technology control systems allowed threat actors to manipulate physical processes and disrupt operations. Attackers compromised equipment settings, causing food spoilage, financial losses and safety hazards.
  • Gwenda Fong, chief executive of CSA, urged administrators to conduct health checks, stating, "Cybersecurity starts with understanding what your business depends on — and making sure those systems are protected."
  • While no similar incidents have been reported locally, CSA is collaborating with the Singapore Food Agency to strengthen network security. Tropical heat means Singapore businesses have a much shorter reaction window if cooling fails.
  • Beyond refrigeration, risks extend to HVAC systems, manufacturing, and utility grids. CSA recommends that entities restrict internet exposure for remote management interfaces, strengthen authentication controls, and ensure operational technology devices receive the latest security patches.
