Singapore Airlines to splash $1.6 billion on luxury long-haul cabins as rivals up their game

The carrier said the overhaul includes larger double beds, sliding privacy doors and new 4K entertainment screens as it competes for premium travelers.

  • Singapore Airlines has announced an investment of more than $1.6 billion to upgrade its long-haul aircraft cabins, marking the largest refurbishment programme in the airline’s history.
  • The overhaul will introduce redesigned seating across all four travel classes, including First Class, Business Class, Premium Economy and Economy, with new cabins expected to enter service from the second half of 2027.
  • First Class passengers will benefit from larger private suites featuring what the airline describes as the largest double bed in commercial aviation, while Business Class will offer fully flat beds and sliding privacy doors.
  • The programme will cover 72 aircraft, including refurbished Airbus A350-900s and new Boeing 777-9 jets, with the investment funded through the airline’s financial reserves.
  • The upgrade comes as international competitors, including Qatar Airways, Emirates, British Airways and United Airlines, invest heavily in premium cabin services to attract high-spending travellers, despite rising fuel costs and aircraft certification delays.
