Simon Parkes: Police end missing sailor investigation

After nearly 40 years, police have filed the investigation into Simon Parkes' disappearance following exhaustive inquiries and advice from the Crown Prosecution Service.

  • Following CPS advice, the force announced on Tuesday it has formally filed the active inquiry into Simon Parkes’ disappearance after exhausting viable lines of enquiry.
  • After a night out, the 18-year-old failed to return to HMS Illustrious, which sailed back to Portsmouth days later with no sign of Simon Parkes, prompting a major manhunt.
  • Years ago specialist teams returned to Gibraltar after new information, with police conducting targeted searches including the Town Range car park, cemetery digs, and an underground water tank in 2023–2024.
  • Police will continue to support the coronial process, with Detective Superintendent Adam Edwards urging members of the public to come forward, stating, `As with any cold case, no case is ever closed indefinitely if we get new information that offers new and legitimate investigative opportunities then we will take further action`.
  • Allan Grimson had been investigated in connection to the case, though he denies involvement, and police continue appealing to former crew members of HMS Illustrious and people who lived in or visited Gibraltar on December 12, 1986.
