Silent lessons my golden retriever taught me about letting go
Coby’s failing sight and hearing ended in a decision to ease his pain, as the author reflects on 9 years of companionship and loss.
Coby, a golden retriever, recently passed away due to non-regenerative anemia and a tumor that had overtaken his joy. The owner made the final gift of rest to ease his suffering.
Ten days after Riley died in summer 2013, the owner adopted Coby at a farmhouse in New York Mills, Minnesota, seeking to fill the emptiness left by the loss.
By 2017, the family moved to Fargo, where Cooper joined the pack. The dogs spent nine years together celebrating holidays, visiting daycare, and serving as food quality inspectors.
Despite failing eyesight and hearing, Coby maintained joy in life, particularly around people. He relied on his keen sense of smell to navigate and seek belly rubs and affection.
Much like that day nearly 13 years ago, the house feels quieter and emptier. Cooper, who instinctively knew their time together had ended, now prefers to grieve in solitude.
