Rory McIlroy Has Angry Exchange with Fan at PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club
McIlroy finished tied for seventh after an errant 16th-hole shot and a heated exchange with a heckling fan.
On Sunday, Rory McIlroy confronted a spectator on the 16th hole at Aronimink Golf Club during the PGA Championship, telling the fan to "shut the f up" before signaling for security to remove them.
Trailing leader Aaron Rai by three strokes on the par-5 16th, McIlroy's frustration boiled over after his second shot from 37 yards landed in a bunker instead of setting up a birdie opportunity.
Rai ultimately won the PGA Championship with a score of-9, while McIlroy finished tied for seventh at 4 under. Jon Rahm, Cam Smith, and Xander Schauffele also failed to overtake him.
Although McIlroy declined to comment on the fan interaction, he has previously called abusive crowd behavior "unacceptable," advocating for higher golf standards and saying the security presence at major events should reflect those expectations.
Earlier in the week, McIlroy noted that abusive fan behavior typically occurs one week every four years when tournaments are contested in the United States, though incidents at the Ryder Cup have proven far more severe.
